Reigate County School Old Girls should also look at the photos of Reigate Lodge in Church Street as the school was built in the grounds of this estate. The Lodge's entrance gates remain as the school's gates. Old Girls may like to contact rcsoldgirl@yahoo.co.uk
if they'd like to receive the Old Girls newsletter. Our archive has many other old pictures, magazines etc.

Good Picture, brings back many memories
Reigate County School. 1940. The Honor Oak School Magazine No. 20.
On September 2nd 1939, 249 girls (out of 450) were in a party which
left the Honor Oak School, Peckham for evacuation to Redhill, together with 81 younger brothers and sisters,
10 helpers, 24 teaching staff and two administrative staff.
Subsequently
50 more Honor Oak girls came to Redhill.
The Head Mistress of Reigate
County School invited Honor Oak to share the use of the County School
building. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Reigate County School
had possession of the classrooms, and on Tuedays, Thursdays, and
Saturdays, Honor Oak had possession. On the other days the girls from the
school which was not in full possession attended in relays of about 70 for instruction
in physical education, music, etc., in the hall and music room.
The school could accomodate 300, and the air-raid shelters (the caves)
accomodated 440 people.
I have The Honor Oak School Magazine 1940 in my possession - get in touch if you are interested.

It s great to see the old school. I was there from 1944 - 1952.
My house was Canterbury. I would be delighted to get in touch with Maureen McLelland now I believe Mrs Phillips a graduate of Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham.Maureen was one of the most honest people that I know. When marking her french Dictation she would not even allow me to add an accent!

I was at the Reigate County School for Girls from 1957 to 1963. I have just read a wonderful book by Gwen Southgate called Coin Street Chronicles. She was in the Honor Oak school when it shared the County school (before my time) and mentions air raids and moving into the caves. Do read this book: ISBN 978-0-5955-1670-4, available from Amazon.com. Helen B Goddard
