This is were I went to school during the war. There was a Swimming Pool at the back, and an Orchard with lots of Apples, Plums, Pears, and school gardens that we tended to. The front Lawn is were we use to play or receive our Families. Lots of happy memories here. I have Googled Earth this, and find that the Swimming Pool has gone and also the Orchard. Sad to say. We also had Air Raid Sheltes in the back, were we use to sit on top and watch the "Doodle Bugs" and Rockets go by on their way to London. It was a Boys school before we took it over in 1939/1940

Philip Pegler from Worcester WR1 1RG posted this comment on Wednesday 09 January 2013 14:50:00.

These next 6 pictures show Spurgeons sports'fields where I was fully occupied 1939-49.By the time I left the lower (boys)field was so over used that we had to play football and cricket matches on the field by the pavilion.

Ironically in 1953/5 I was a fireman in Worcestershire and I saw a photo of a helicopter landing on our cricket pitch in The Fire Brigade Union magazine as by then the grounds were the property of The Surrey Fire Service. That picture was in consequence re printed in our Within Our Gates magazine. Is it possible to re-create that in this series?

My dad grew up in spurgeons children home in Reigate, from 1943 to 1954' The final year he moved to Birchington home. His name was Anthony (Tony) Preston and his brothers David and Robin and sister Sandra all lived there too. Does anyone remember my dad?

Philip Pegler from Worcester WR1 1RG posted this comment on Friday 11 January 2013 17:19:00.

Following my comments on previous photograph;after careful thought I realise that this is the only dated picture.we at Spurgeons certainly used these sports fields during the war years but we only wore whites for matches. The players shown must have been of a private school who vacated the site in 1939.

Comment 2

Philip Pegler from Wocester WR1 1RG posted this comment on Thursday 14 February 2013 20:06:00.

My Comment 1 is born out by the fact that the wall creeper on the main house was no longer there in the war,so picture must have ben taken when a private school occupied the site, prior 1939
