This the front view facing Reigate Hill Road. The front door was rarely used during my time (1947-51)except for parents at the beginning of term. Date of this photo could be anywhere during the 1940s.

I attended from Dec. 54 to May, 55. Mr. B was Headmaster. I cannot remember which house I was in (Lions, Dragons, Unicorns) Remember Matron? A very good time, long ago. I cannot locate the school on Google earth. JDK

Mr. Krainock: the school remained vacant following the death of Mr. Bannister and was finally sold off for redevelopment: houses, I think. The matron I remember was Miss Redlich, who I though was Austrian but was apparently French.
P.S. I was a Dragon . . . .

We have formed an association for the old boys for Hillside School, Godalming to where Hillside was moved in 1940. We have traced 45% of the 380 boys who went to Hillside but would love to hear from the Reigate pupils.

I posted a whole school photo for Hillside Reigate for 1951 and could still name a number of the boys there: also a cricket and soccer XI for 1948 and 1951 with names a I recall.

Hillside from 1956 until it closed after Mr Bannsister's death - Boarder in both the School House and then The "Tower" House. Masters included Mr Whitty (Maths), Mr Young (Latin & Greek) and Mr Levinson (French) and a very attractive second matron called Miss Donkin. Played proper Rugby over the road in a field that is now a housing estate, and happy memories of singing hymns in the Gym loud enough to blow the roof off the old building. Contemporary alumni included Christopher Hampton (Oscar winning playwright) Charrington brothers (Brewery) the Iranian brothers Sinai....

Dear Michael
I have gathered a list of Reigate pupils with help from Nick Ranson. It would be nice to make contact.

I went to Coniston school in Alma Road and which shared the playing field with Hillside, there was a back gate into it. There was an open air swimming pool in one corner.

I was a boarder at Hillside from 1951 to 1954 and a dayboy from 1954 to 1956. When was the school demolished? I remember Mr. Bannister as head at that time.

I am Peter Osborne's brother. I was a boarder here from September, 1952 through mid 1954, then a weekly boarder from September 1954 through mid 1955 and then a day boy until July 1958.
I would like to know when the school closed (perhaps 1960, when the founder and headmaster, Mr. Banister died). Also, the buildings were not demolished until must later, perhaps 10 to 15 years? Further, the school grounds were fenced off for many years after that, but the playing fields and swimming pool building were acquired by another entity. Perhaps the former building areas are still fenced off.
Lastly, whatever happened to all the school paper records and all the library books?

This is the back view of the photo above: the bay window was the fron of a room that held the library and was also a classroom. The wooden building to the right was the gym and assembly Hall where morning prayers were held znc boys were caned for various infractions after assembly! I should know: I was caned from time to time, but became school captain in 1951 and monitored such events! I revisited the school in 1959 after National Service and talked with Mr. Bannister. I think the school closed in 1960, tho' I didn't know that he had dies that year.

This was not a schoolroom in my time (1947-51) but always an assembly hall and a gym. The Trellis in the foreground dates the photo before 1947 certainly, because it wasn't there in 1947!

I agree with David who I should remember as I was with my brother David at Hillside from 1948-52. I would love to hear from David or anyone at the School at that time

I attended the school from 1953 to 1957. I have strong recollections of my time there and the Head Master's clockwork train set out in the open behind the Headmaster's House.
